Young People In LL Calls For Unbiased Access to SRH Services

A grouping of young people in TA Malili’s area in Lilongwe has called for equitable access to sexual reproductive health services if Malawi is to end rising cases of child marriages.

One of the youths Lucy Goodson said it is worrisome that most youths are forced into early marriages due to early pregnancies which can be avoided with adequate and easy access to sexual reproductive health services.

“I got pregnant when I was in Standard 8, life has not been the same. I have been through several challenges, the boy who impregnated me denied the pregnancy. After nine months I gave birth and returned to school. I am now on contraceptives and continuing well with my education,” Lucy said.

“All this has been possible because I am in this youth club, we share many informative ideas,” she added.

The remarks were made during a tour on sexual health project under Oxfam dubbed Her Future Her Choice.

Senior group Kumphindi of the area hailed such projects saying following such initiatives have helped to terminated six child marriages in his area.

Her Future Her Choice project is aimed at preventing child marriages, HIV/AIDS, and easy access and availability of Sexual Reproductive Health Services.
