MEC Employees Frustrated Over A Restraining Order On Unvaccinated Staff

Workers at the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) are scheduled to engage their bosses over a decision barring them from work if they are not vaccinated for COVID19.

Through their union’s vice president Sylvester Luka, the workers have grown frustrated over the decision which they say infringes on their rights.

Luka is asking MEC to revisit its decision. “The concerns are on what the commission has done directing that those staff who have not been vaccinated should not report for duties until they get the vaccine,” said Luka.

The announcement by MEC has sparked public outrage as health experts now say it is in conflict with COVID19 regulations that were developed.

But Minister of health Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda maintains the COVID19 vaccine is one’s choice as such entities should not force their workers to get one.

“As a ministry of health, we just give guidance and advice but we made our position very clear and if somebody is doing something contrary, am sure they are right channels that can be used but the COVID19 jab is one’s choice”.

Forced jabs are now becoming a tradition across the continent as countries are taking measures to minimize the spread of the pandemic.
