Chakwera Fires Two Top Government Officials

Kambala (L) fired Kambala (L) fired

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has fired Newton Kambala as minister of energy and Chris Chaima, his advisor on strategy and manifesto implementation.

The two served on their positions until Wednesday evening when they were fired just hours after they appeared at the magistrate court in Lilongwe where they were formally charged for conspiracy to influence a public officer to abuse office alongside president for AFORD Enock Chihana.

They are alleged to have influenced the deputy director at National Oil Company OF Malawi (NOCMA) to award fuel supply contracts to some companies.

Two separate statements signed by Secretary to the president and cabinet, Zangazanga Chikhosi, and another by Director of Communications at the statehouse, Sean Kampondeni indicates that the firings are with immediate effect.

A political expert, Wonderful Mkutche has meanwhile described the firing as a warning shot to those holding various positions in government.

“The President has done the right thing to make sure that he is sending the right message that his administration is not going to tolerate corruption or anyone who is alleged to be involved in corruption”

Kambala becomes the second cabinet minister to be fired by President Chakwera after Ken Kandodo who was fired for alleged abuse of COVID19 funds.
