A Standard 2 learner at Chikombola primary school, in the area of Senior Chief Kalonga in Salima has pleaded with authorities and well-wishers to consider constructing additional classroom blocks at her school, saying the current status of learning under a tree is challenging during rainy season.

Fortune Phiri said this after receiving a school uniform and exercise books from Nakondwa Community Based Organisation saying most of the days during the rainy season they do not learn and fears this has a bearing on their future.

"I am grateful to Debbie for giving us school uniforms and other learning materials, but we want other well-wishers to help us with a classroom block as there are only 2 classroom blocks accommodating four classes that most of us learn from under a tree which becomes challenging during the rainy season," he said.

Headteacher for the school Mailosi Chipalamwazani shared the same sentiment adding the school also only has one teacher's house that most of the teachers travel a distance of about 10 kilometers to school.

"Today is a happy day that 200 of our pupils have received school uniforms from well-wishers from Australia through Nakondwa CBO, but we still need more support if the teachers are to discharge their duties properly, among such needs is teachers houses," Chipalamwazani said.

Nakondwa CBO with support from Debbie Zammit from Australia has donated 200 uniforms to needy learners exercise books and pens to ease the challenge the children were facing leading to absenteeism and dropout according to the CBO's Executive Director Wise Balakasi.

"We saw the need and thought of engaging our partner Debbie from Australia, to help with school uniforms for needy learners who at some point would stop going to school for lack of the same, fortunately, we got a positive response," said Balakasi.

Meanwhile, Senior Chief Kalonga has appealed for concerted efforts towards promoting education for all through the provision of basic necessities like school uniforms which is a challenge to many in rural areas.
