Second Lady Pushes for Cyber Security

Second Lady Mary Chilima has appealed to government to strengthen cyber security, warning any delays would lead to increased disinformation that could affect girls and women.

Mrs. Chilima said this in Lilongwe on Monday during the commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child where a number of girls and influencers made similar calls.

On 11 October every year, Malawi joins the rest of the world in commemorating International Day of the Girl, and one of the issues that have rocked this year's commemoration is diversity and the opportunity for girls to be free online.

While giving her keynote address in Lilongwe on Monday, Mrs. Chilima appealed on the need to promote cyber security, further expressing fear that the digital world does not offer opportunities for young ladies.

Chilima is the ambassador for Plan Malawi International girls get equal free to be online and has since called for the need to deal with fake news, saying failing to do so is eroding the self-esteem of girls.

"COVID-19 has had a huge impact on all our lives, and girls are more reliant than ever on digital platforms. But lies online have real-life consequences and We need to equip girls and all children -for an increasingly digital world," she said.

Plan Malawi country Director Phoebe Kasoga has since emphasized on the need to make available internet connection to both in the urban and rural areas.

Meanwhile, Information Minister Gospel Kazako has promised to address the concerns which will among other things see perpetrators of cyberbullying facing the law.

This year's International Day of the girl is being commemorated under the theme Digital generation our generation.
