Malawi government has signed a 1 trillion kwacha grant agreement with the United States of America.

The 1 trillion kwacha according to United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Country Director, Dr. Catie Lott, will be channeled towards the implementation of programs aimed at bolstering the Malawi 2063 development blueprint.

Dr. Lott says the US government remains committed to advancing Malawi’s development needs.

“What we are trying to do in this agreement, we are looking at it from a long term perspective what is that we can do to help Malawians to take control of their own development objectives,” she said.

Minister of finance, Felix Mlusu during the signing ceremony however complained that inadequate financial mechanisms remain a major setback in the implementation of development projects.

But Mlusu was quick to say that the five-year agreement will go a long way towards advancing the country’s development ambitions.

“Your commitment to providing 1.2 billion US dollars in grant aid to Malawians is not a simple commitment. The USA government through USAID is and remains one of the largest bilateral donors for Malawi”

Outgoing US ambassador to Malawi, Robert Scott said US shares similar goals like those of Malawi as such, the grant will beef up the operation of a wide range of areas including health and public sector services.

Some areas that the grant will cover for the next five years include, strengthening the public sector’s accountability and effectiveness.
