Women Legal Resource Centre (WOLREC) has bemoaned continued infringement on rights of women on Land ownership in Salima saying this is affecting development as most women are the ones involved in farming compared to men.

This is according to WOLREC Executive Director Maggie Kathewera Banda who was speaking in Salima on Tuesday at the launch of Land for Her project to be implemented in Salima and Zomba saying a lot of land is owned by men and this needs to be addressed.

"Ideally, this project was supposed to be implemented in all the districts in the country because the need is almost everywhere, but we saw that we should come here in Salima to sensitize the communities about the law among other issues so that women should start demanding because this practice is very high in Salima where women do not have control over land," Kathewera Banda said.

She observes in districts like Salima women rarely have land of their own despite being the ones who mostly do farming than men.

Meanwhile, Minister of Gender Patricia Kaliyati says empowering women to have their own land is critical as it will help the country to be food secured year in year out as they are the ones who use it perfectly.

"It is important to empower women to have land because they are currently more vulnerable, and these are the ones who cultivate, they are the farmers so when they have land they properly use it, so for us to achieve the agenda 2063 and 2030 aspiration we need to empower women," said Kaliyati.

Traditional Authority Makanjira of Salima has since committed to helping in raising awareness and supporting women on land issues.

Land for Her Project by Women Legal Resource Centre WOLREC will be implemented in two districts of Salima and Zomba for two years.
