Issue Maize Export Ban, Parley Ask Govt

The Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture has renewed its earlier plea to government to issue a ban on maize export suggesting a position that alleging there may be pockets of food shortages in some parts of the country.

Speaking to Zodiak Online, Chairperson for the Committee Sameer Suleman, wonders why government is yet to issue the ban quoting a recent Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) report which said 1.5 Million Malawians require food assistance this year

"Issuing maize export ban now remains the best solution to address a possible food deficit this year. We will continue to push government on the issue for the benefit of hunger-stricken Malawians," he said.

The Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture is also citing the rise of fertilizer prices saying it can lead to scarcity of the staple grain.

Ministry of Agriculture Spokesperson, Gracian Lungu asked for more time before commenting on the matter.
