Chakwera Starts His 3-Nation Trip, Economists Push for Trade & Economic Opportunities

President Lazarus Chakwera is out on probably his longest trip out of the country.

He has flown to Nairobi, Kenya from where he will proceed to Dubai before heading for Scotland. Each of the three destinations has in store lots of lessons for Malawi to learn.

In Nairobi, Chakwera is expected to meet President Uhuru Kenyatta for bilateral talks on trade and development before flying to Dubai for the global trade expo. He shall then proceed to Scotland for the Cop26 and assembly for discussion of the global environment.

During his departure, president Chakwera said the trip will consolidate the relationship between the two countries and other countries adding Malawi can fully achieve its vision of it strengthening relationships with other countries.

Gains and losses

Dr. Betchani Tchereni is a renowned economist and trade expert. He thinks this is an opportunity for Malawi to diversify trade and economic opportunities.

For economic expert, Sam Chiwaula, the outing by President Chakwera should help Malawi increase opportunities for the export of locally produced things. Chiwaula was however quick to point that if not treaded carefully, the trip would be a waste for Malawians.

Chakwera has flown out of Kamuzu International Airport aboard a commercial flight, Kenyan Airways.
