President Lazarus Chakwera’s push for urgent action on climate change challenges rose at one of the COP26 side meetings with a call to world leaders to adopt climate-smart interventions.

Chakwera says this is the only way the globe can minimize the impacts of climate change that continue to be felt.

When addressing, Scotland’s first minister, Nicole Sturgeon, and youths who gathered in Lilongwe for a virtual audience with Chakwera, he described young people and climate-smart interventions as powerful catalysts for change.

The president said while at the conference, he managed to push for the $100 billion (75 trillion kwacha) annual commitment on climate change and called for robust investment in cleaner and cooking solutions.

Malawi Scotland Partnership, Chief Executive Officer, Stella Masangano responded to Chakwera’s sentiments by asking world leaders to include youths in their programming.

“Hearing that from the state president, we are excited that the government is taking an initiative to include the voice of young people, the youth are future leaders of this country, once we empower them, once they are capacitated, we are sure that in the next years to come the youths will able to handle these challenges that we are facing today,” said Masangano.

The COP26 summit in Glasgow, Scotland will run through 12th November.
