First Lady Monica Chakwera says there is a growing need for women's economic empowerment interventions in the country mainly in rural areas of Malawi to achieve sustainable development and end poverty.

She said this Tuesday in the area of Traditional Authority Maganga in Salima where together with Mozambican first Lady Isaura Nyusi visited and appreciated women economic empowerment interventions supported by Women's Legal Resource Centre (WOLREC).

"Some of the key steps in achieving the 2030 agenda for sustainable development is economically empowering women and financial inclusion, through years of women's empowerment and closing gender gaps," said the First Lady.

On her part Mozambican first Lady Isaura Nyusi says Women Economic Empowerment is key to ending poverty in Africa hence the need for collaboration.

"As a continent, we need to work together to uplift lives of women, and this will help our countries to develop, learning from what women are doing in Malawi I will take this to my country," Madam Nyusi said.

Meanwhile, Executive Director of Women's Legal Resources centre (WOLREC) Maggie Kathewera Banda says through their interventions they have realized that it is better to empower women as they are able to support and transform their homes and so Gender-based violence has no space in such homes.

"We have realized that a woman who is economically and socially empowerment can not be abused, and also this is a way of supporting girl child education as mostly empowered women think of their children's education, so much so that with the little resources we have we want to intensify such interventions," Said Kathewera Banda.

One of the women from the area of traditional authority Maganga beneficiary of the WOLREC women economic empowerment interventions Jenipher Shonga says her being once a victim of Gender-based violence is now economically stable through her business after getting loans from village bank.

The first Lady Monica Chakwera and Isaura Nyusi have donated two sewing machines to Maganga women.
