Minister of Gender, Social Welfare and Community Development, Patricia Kaliati, has called upon women willing to contest in the 2025 Tripartite Elections to start registering their names to appropriate bodies for better preparations.

Kaliati says an early registration of women aspirants will help players lobbying for the welfare of women in the country have proper research and assessment and enable them mobilize resources to support potential women in good time.

Kaliati says: "We expect to have a full list of women aspirants by end of January next year to enable players lobbying for the welfare of women in the country make proper assessment and mobilize resources to support potential women in good time."

The minister notes that the development will help provide a clear picture on women that are fully willing to contest; thereby, saving resources that could be wasted.

"Now that some constituencies have been demarcated, we are optimistic the number of women being elected in the Local Government and Parliamentary elections will increase," said the minister.

She spoke this in Mchinji yesterday when she presided over a community event on women leadership, organised by Oxfam, as part of the 50:50 Elect Her and Retain Her Campaign.

Oxfam Country Director, Lingalireni Mihowa, asked Malawians to elect and retain women in political positions, saying research has shown that women are transformative when approaching developments, and that there is accountability and integrity when it comes to their participation in politics.

"Research that we conducted revealed that a good number of women are performing well and that voters still have trust in them. We are therefore hopeful that come 2025 tripartite elections, a lot of women will retain their seats," Mihowa said.

She said; "reaching this far Oxfam has spent over K200 million in implementing the 50:50 Elect Her and Retain Her Campaign."

Member of Parliament for Mchinji North, Rachael Zulu, who is serving her third term, said women should be exemplary when exercising duties and ensure there is cordial relationship between them and constituents.

"It should start with us women creating cordial working relationship with chiefs and community members, that way will have trust in us," said Zulu.

At the event, women Members of Parliament from Mchinji, Dowa and Ntchisi were given various materials including bicycles and motorcycles, to help mobilize community action on ending violence against women and girls, including ending child marriages and promoting girls access to education.
