Covid-19 Taskforce to Relax Preventive Measures

Covid-19 Taskforce to Relax Preventive Measures

The Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19 is scheduled to meet next week to review Covid-19 preventive measures, imposed in December last year to control the spread of the Omicron variant, with a possibility to relax the restrictions.

Taskforce co-chairperson Khumbize Kandondo-Chiponda who is also minister of Health told Zodiak Online the development comes after observing that coronavirus spread has slowed down.

“We are going to meet next week to review the restrictions and the whole Covid-19 status in the country and indeed since things are much better now, we want to open up. We have suffered a lot,” said Chiponda.

She further said the Taskforce gave a space of two weeks after the festive season to observe the situation.

“We had to give it some time because some people might have been exposed during the festive season and show signs now, as you know the virus has a life cycle of two to three weeks.”

But health rights activist George Jobe has a different opinion. He feels this may not be the right time to start thinking of relaxing the restrictions.

“It would be important to wait until the death numbers also start getting low, otherwise when an announcement is made to relax the restrictions other people may misunderstand and will completely get relaxed.”

In December last year, the Presidential task force on Covid-19 introduced measures that are still in force to date which among others restrict indoor meetings to 100 people, 250 for outdoor meetings, and reintroduced a curfew where all people are compelled to be indoors by 10 pm.
