Icelandic Govt Approves a Multi-Million Dollars Programme For KK

The Icelandic government has approved a Multi-Million United States Dollar Programme, which is expected to be implemented in Nkhotakota District, from the mid-this year.

District Council Spokesperson, Stanley Nkhondoyachepa, confirmed the development yesterday, adding that paperwork is being finalised, to commence the first phase of the Nkhotakota Basic Service Programme, which focuses on sectors such as health and education.

The approval of the programme, has since excited district authorities, at all levels.

For instance, Nkhondoyachepa, says the programme will assist in transforming the district, as activities such as the construction of school blocks are being planned.

“This is one of the most exciting news for the people of Nkhotakota because we have been facing a lot of challenges in the areas where projects coming from the government of Iceland will address. We also had similar plans in our District Development Plan” he said.

Nkhondoyachepa, further says the first phase of the programme which shall run for four years, shall commence in July this year.

“The council is working in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government as well as our colleagues from Iceland, in developing a project document for the four years. We hope that by June, this should be completed,” said Nkhondoyachepa.

Traditional Authority Kalimanjira of the district has also welcomed the programme.

He says it is timely as the district is facing numerous challenges in sectors such as health and education.

“We need support in education in which we have few secondary schools, we also need more health facilities and support in mitigating effects of climate change”, said the traditional leader.

The Icelandic government, has also been implementing various projects in Mangochi district.
