In an interview yesterday, DODMA Spokesperson, Chipiliro Khamula, said Flooding Water- Early Warning Systems, have been planted in some districts, while drainage systems have been constructed in the country’s major cities, to reduce the risk of flash floods.

He said Mtandire, Area 49, and Kaliyeka townships in Lilongwe and Zolozolo in Mzuzu, are some of the places which have new drainage systems, this rainy season.

Khamula further said search and rescue teams, are ready to conduct operations, should there be such disasters.

“We have standby search and rescue teams comprising the Malawi Police Service, the Malawi Defense Force, and other stakeholders,” said Khamula.

Acting Director for the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services, Lucy Mtilatila, says although Tropical Cyclone Batsirai and Tropical Storm Cliff, will not pose any threat to Malawi, there are other rainfall bearing systems that still stand.

“We have Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone and Congo air mass, these two are likely to affect Malawi in the next four days also,” she said.

This comes at a time the country is yet to recover from the devastating efforts of Tropical Storm Ana, which affected the Southern region.
