Chakwera’s SONA Draws Mixed Views

There have been mixed reactions to President Lazarus Chakwera’s State of the Nation Address (Sona) delivered in Parliament last week, with Opposition Parliamentarians trashing it as a document of lies and Government MPs backing it.

Some opposition lawmakers, in their debates, claimed, Chakwera’s third Sona failed to provide solutions to problems facing Malawians and that the President is clueless on how to lead the country.

Legislator for Mulanje Bale, Victor Musowa, lamented what he called continued promises by leaders who cannot deliver.

“Madam speaker, Sonas have been presented but they don’t bring Malawi to reality and why do we continue to tell Malawians of things that will not happen.

We promise our people fertilizer we tell them after the maize has already tasseled that we don’t have the fertilizer,” said Musowa.

Musowa said leaders have created a situation where people cannot reach out to them.

“Our voters must be very angry where they are but they are toothless, they don’t have any way to communicate to us because when we tell them lies, we wait for five years to lie to them again.”

According to Musowa, the contents of Chakwera’s recent Sona are the same things he has been mentioning in his previous Sonas

The MP pointed out that President Chakwera’s Sona has failed to provide policy direction on issues affecting Malawians.

Taking over from Musowa, Member of Parliament for Mulanje South West George Chaponda described Malawi as a country in Intensive Care Unit and needs swift and decisive action to save her from destruction.

But Member of Parliament for Dedza Central East Joshua Malango backed the President’s Sona.

Said Malango “On their way to Canaan Israelites faced numerous challenges yet they did not give up until they reached their destination.”

He appealed for calm from Malawians adding those against Chakwera’s Sona are those that benefit from the broken systems.

In his Sona delivered in Parliament on 3 January 2022, President Chakwera outlined how his administration intends to address challenges facing the country.
