In an effort to conserve the natural resources in Lake Malawi National Park, Ripple Africa on Friday handed over two boats to the government through the ministry of Tourist Culture and Wildlife for patrols.

According to Ripple Africa Country Director Force Ngwira, this is in response to the growing need for patrols on the Lake following increasing cases of encroachment into the protected area by fishers and depleting some protected fish species like Mbuna.

"We are implementing a project on fish conservation and we were approached by the department of wildlife, they complained about mobility problems to do patrols on the Lake hence we saw it fit to help out because government alone can not afford to address these challenges," Ngwira said.

Meanwhile, Minister of Tourism Michael Usi who received the boats has commended Ripple Africa for the donation saying as the Malawi government is reviving the tourism industry so it can make a significant contribution to the economy government needs partners.

"This is the way to go if government is to achieve its aspiration of making tourism a thriving sector that would significantly contribute to the economy, we need such partners," said Usi.

He has since appealed to communities along the lake to be responsible and take good care of the freshwater Lake which he says is the country's precious treasure.

The two boats one to be in Salima and another in Monkey Mangochi, are all to the tune of 15 million kwacha.
