Minister Challenge Teachers to Be Professional

The Ministry of Education has challenged teachers in the country to honor rules and regulations that guide the profession in order to uplift the country's education sector.

Minister responsible Agnes Nyalonje, said this on Monday in Lilongwe during the official launch of the Teachers Code of Conduct.

According to Nyalonje, the conduct will assist to create a conducive environment for teachers and all learners across the country.

"When you have a group of people performing certain duties, there must be rules and regulations to be followed so as to promote professionalism when discharging duties, everyone must know the difference between acceptable and non-acceptable behaviors," said Nyalonje.

Teachers Union of Malawi Secretary-General, Charles Kumchenga believes the conduct will ensure the excellency of the profession.

"This document will assist the employer and the employees because in some cases we have seen some employers punishing the employees without following procedures," added Kumchenga.

The code of conduct among other things aims at demonstrating professional competence and accountability whilst upholding the highest integrity.
