Ministry of Energy says it is analyzing data for 35 thousand rural households that are set to be connected to the national grid free of charge under the free electricity connection programme for the 2022/23 financial year.

Spokesperson for the Ministry Upile Kamoto however told Zodiak Online Wednesday that the amount of money to be used in implementing the exercise will be known once data analysis is completed.

“The Ministry is ready to implement the free electricity connection programme. What we are doing now is to analyze data for all the targeted beneficiaries for the 2022/23 financial year,” she said.

Kamoto added that the priority is rural households.

Meanwhile, Social commentator, Wesley Mwambakulu says government needs to be careful with corrupt officers who might threaten the successful implementation of the whole initiative.

“Government has to be careful with officers entrusted to carry out the initiative. We need those that are transparent and honest,” he said.

Free electricity connection is among the campaign promises the Tonse Government made prior to June 2020 presidential election.
