Matewere claims with the country experiencing disasters year in year out, there is a need to intensify activities among communities to instill a spirit of planting trees to combat the same.

“Tree planting seems a problem among the citizenry as they usually wait for authorities to take lead. However, let us take this as a habit to replenish the environment that has for years been distracted,” Matewere said.

He spoke this at Kasale village where the council disclosed that this year alone, intends to plant 1 Million tree seedlings in all the constituencies across the district.

According to Matewere, the district has so far raised 800 tree seedlings out of the 1 Million it intends to plant.

Meanwhile, Inkosi Kwataine of the district observed that strengthening community by-laws is key to enhancing the survival of planted seedlings.

“Communities need to shoulder responsibilities of managing the newly planted trees for their survival. Further, punishing those against by-law is also ideal to restore forest cover,” Kwataine said.
