Govt Recommends Removal of MERA Board Of Directors

Kachaje- His appointment under the microscope Kachaje- His appointment under the microscope

Government has recommended to parliament the removal of the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority board of directors for what it says was an irregular appointment of the current MERA chief executive officer Henry Kachaje.

There has been controversy since Kachanje was hired mid last year after some of those who participated in the interviews reported to the Ombudsman that he did not have the required qualification, a Master’s Degree, by that time.

In a leaked letter addressed to the Public Appointments Committee dated 18th February, secretary to the government Zangazanga Chikhosi asks the committee to approve the dismissal of the board.

The matter is already under the Ombudsman who was stopped by MERA through a court injunction from releasing its report faulting the recruitment of Kachaje.

Chairperson of PAC Joyce Chitsulo says they will meet on Saturday, February 26 to review the request.
