Director-General for International Union for Conservation of Nature - IUCN, Dr. Bruno Oberle says Malawi must learn from experiences on effects of environmental degradation if efforts of restoring nature are to pay dividends.

Dr. Oberle told Zodiak Online in Ntcheu where he claims despite the country’s rapid population growth challenging environmental restoration, collective efforts from all stakeholders remain effective to achieve the same.

He gave an example of Switzerland where the government and communities successfully replenished forests citing this has helped to reduce the impacts of climate change.

“Malawi government must invest heavily in conservation in order to restore the environment,” he said.

The international organization is restoring 5000 hectares of land surrounding Mpira dam catchment area in Ntcheu for the next four years.

Ntcheu District Commissioner, Francis Matewere feels empowering local communities economically is key in combating environmental degradation which has not spared the district.

In the district according to Matewere, illegal charcoal production, encroachment and wanton cutting down of trees is threatening the district’s close to 71 thousand forest cover.
