Delay to Convene Youth Parley Worries Former Speaker

Former first Speaker for Malawi's Children Parliament says delay to convene Youth Parliament almost four years the last session was held, is an indication that authorities are not caring to improve the welfare of youths in the country.

The former speaker, Charles Kabena claims with young people currently going through challenges amidst COVID-19 pandemic, convening such a meeting is crucial now for youths' well-being.

Kabena observed that with many years elapsing without convening youth Parliament, it is an indication that young people will continue to be vulnerable in society.

“The country is failing to intervene in addressing youths' sufferings amidst COVID-19 pandemic where unemployment among young people has worsened.

“Such meetings are crucial considering that resolutions made by youths guide those in authority to help and intervene in young people's concerns,” he said.

In response, Spokesperson for the National Assembly, Ian Mwenye says authorities are currently reviewing the whole process of Youth Parliament.

Youth Parliament which is one of the outreach activities of the Malawi Parliament of taking Parliament to the people was last held in April 2018.

Members are selected from all 193 constituencies aimed at giving youths a platform to voice their views and concerns on critical issues affecting their lives for government and concerned organizations to ably address.
