Kabaza Operators Cost NU Council MK10M in Revenue

Non-compliance of some kabaza motorbike and bicycle operators in paying business licenses to Ntcheu District Council has cost the council MK10 Million in revenue collection in 2021/22 financial year.

Council’s Finance Service Committee Chairperson, Councilor Stella Mpaso has told Zodiak Online that in this 2022/23 financial year, authorities have now resorted to contact and dialogue with the operators to address the problem to ensure compliance on the same.

"Collection of revenue from kabaza operators has been challenging for the year 2021/22 where millions of Kwacha has been lost in the process," she said.

Mpaso made the revelation Thursday when the council together with Police met the operators to discuss issues bordering on business licenses and security.

The meeting follows a fracas that happened last year December where operators barricade M1 road in protest of police and council's decision to confiscate motorbikes for various offenses.

While acknowledging the issue at hand, Chairperson for Nsipe Motorbike Operators, Bernard Banda says will shoulder the responsibility of civic educating fellow operators on compliance.

"It is embarrassing to always tussle with the council when it comes to settling for business licenses as such behavior portrays a bad image to our business.

Going forward, I will make sure that we all pay in time to avoid disagreements that might arise due to non-compliance in paying the same," he said.

Meanwhile, Ntcheu Police Station, Community Policing Coordinator, Willy Bunya has assured the operators of safety while plying their business across the district.

"Cases of motorbike theft are becoming rampant in the country. We have seen operators being robbed, hacked, and even killed," he said.

According to the council, the district has at least 4, 000 both motorbike and bicycle kabaza operators. They pay to the council between six to ten thousand kwacha in business licenses per year.
