Govt Optimistic Pigeon Peas Could Transform Malawi's Economy

Government is optimistic that pigeon peas is one key crop that can assist in transforming the country's agriculture sector and economy.

Minister of Agriculture Lobin Lowe made the remarks during the official launch of pigeon peas recipes and Animal feed book in Lilongwe.

"Introducing well structured markets for the crop can also improve pigeon peas farming in the country, we have the capacity to generate more revenue through this crop," Lowe said.

But visiting Christian Aid Global Chief Executive Officer Patrick Watt has asked Malawi government to embrace policies that can boost pigeon peas market to reduce high poverty levels.

"Smallholder farmers are determined in this pigeon peas farming hence the need to implement policies that can create more export markets for Malawi"

However Nandolo Farmers Association of Malawi (NFAM) Chairperson Suzan Chimbalo says lack of a well established market is still a major challenge among most farmers.

"Every year farmers are desperate on where to sale their produce which gives advantage to vendors to by the crop at a cheaper price"

Malawi produces 400 metric tons of pigeon peas every year and is on position 3 worldwide in pigeon peas production.
