Physically Challenged Boy Plead For Help

Parents of a 15 year old boy with a disability in Lilongwe have pleaded for support that would enable the child eat or answer the call of nature on his own or with minimal assistance.

Mercy Khuleya, mother to the boy from Malingunde said the boy who developed the condition when he was six years old after suffering from an unknown disease does not move or eat on his own.

“Martin (the boy) developed the condition when he was six years old, he cannot eat or go to toilet on his own,” said Khuleya.

She said Martin needs to be examined and treated by doctors with special expertise but the family which depend on piece works to earn a living cannot manage to finance the process.

Meanwhile a charity organization, Friends of Mponda has donated a wheelchair to ease the boy’s mobility challenges as well as enabling him attend school.

The organization’s spokesperson Neema Dzama said persons with disabilities need to be supported and encouraged to attend school for them to be able to realize their dreams.

“People with disabilities need to be encouraged and not discriminated against,” said Dzama.

Dzama has since encouraged everyone to have the spirit of sharing with the less privileged regardless of one’s wealth.

The organization which uses Facebook and Instagram among other platforms to mobilizing support has also encouraged those supporting people with disabilities to ensure they provide support that would assist the beneficiaries participate in sustainable economic activities.
