MoE Extends Auxiliary Sec. School Teachers Contracts

The ministry of Education has extended contracts for all auxiliary secondary school teachers who were recruited at the peak of Covid-19 to help decongest schools, as a measure to stem further spread of the pandemic.

Ministry of Education Spokesperson Chikondi Chimala has confirmed that the extension is for four months from June to September 2022.

He told Zodiak Online the development partly follows good work demonstrated by the teachers in the short period that they have been working.

“As you remember the teachers were taken onboard to help mitigate the effects of covid-19, to reduce congestion in class rooms. Since we still have covid-19, the government thought it wise to extend the contracts.” Said Chimala.

A statement signed by Secretary for Education Chikondano Mussa informing the teachers to continue discharging their duties, however, indicates the teachers are at liberty to accept or reject the extension.

Reads part of the statement “those interested to continue with the assignment, are required to sign a new contract with their respective Education Managers by Friday, 3rd June 2022.”

Education expert Benedicto Kondowe while commending the ministry for the extension, told us government needs to consider permanently recruiting the teachers.

“We believe the government has not acted in good faith knowing that the terms of these auxiliary teachers are not the same as teachers that have been engaged on a permanent basis.” Said Kondowe.

He added that the solution is temporary, arguing that in a short period the government will get back to point zero, discussing whether to extend the contracts or not.

“A decision like this one, where the extension is just for a few months, clearly shows indecisiveness on the part of the government or failure to come up with a sustainable solution to the problem.”

In 2021, the ministry of education recruited 3,270 auxiliary primary school teachers before recruiting 1,000 secondary school teachers in January 2022 to increase the number of teachers.
