CHRR & YAS to Boycott CONGOMA Meeting

The Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation and the Youth and Society are planning to boycott Council for Non-Governmental Organizations-Congoma dissemination meeting on the 2022 NGO Amended Law scheduled for this coming Tuesday.

CHRR Executive Director Michael Kaiyatsa says the gathering has no bearing since the bill was already assented into law by President Lazarus Chakwera.

"We feel the meeting is ill timed since it was already assented into law and we are also waiting for a response from the Attorney General," Kaiyatsa said.

But CONGOMA Chairperson Kossam Munthali has described the decision by the two organizations as their right, stressing they will proceed with the meetings.

"We respect their decision since Malawi is a democratic society and that will not stop us engaging all the concerned Civil Society Organizations," Munthali explained.

The Council for Non-Governmental Organizations in Malawi (CONGOMA) is expected to conduct the dissemination meetings on the Amended NGO Law in partnership with the NGO Regulatory Authority (NGORA).
