Two Organizations Boycott CONGOMA Meeting

Two human rights organizations, Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation and the Youth and Society have on Wednesday boycotted dissemination meeting by the Council for Non-Governmental Organizations on the review of the Amended NGO law.

CHRR Executive Director, Michael Kaiyatsa says for them the gathering had no bearing since the bill was already assented to by President Lazarus Chakwera.

"It is unfortunate that the NGO governing body has proceeded with the engagement despite some gaps with the new law," he added.

But Vice Chairperson for CONGOMA Governing Council Dalitso Kubalasa, while backing the decision to hold the meeting, believes the engagement will address grievances by some CSOs.

"As NGO's we always work as a family and we will still be engaging those that are opposing the NGO amended Law," he said.

The Council for Non-Governmental Organizations in Malawi is conducting the consultation meetings on the Amended NGO Law in partnership with the NGO Regulatory Authority.
