Law Society Cautions of Political Turmoil

Malawi Law Society (MLS) and a Governance expert, Sheriff Kaisi have cautioned, the country would witness a political turmoil if issues surrounding corruption allegations of Vice President Saulosi Chilima are not resolved in the soonest time possible.

Speaking with Zodiak online, Kaisi asked the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and other law enforcement agencies to come up with quick and lawful resolutions of issues that have given rise to the situation.

Kaisi fears that withdrawing the Vice President’s responsibilities as recently announced by President Lazarus Chakwera will affect operations of other government functions.

“If that takes long, definitely there will be a political crisis in the country because they will not be a good term between the President and Vice President,” said Kaisi.

Malawi Law Society President Patrick Mpaka is asking law enforcement agencies to support the ACB in its pursuit of legal processes surrounding the corruption allegations against the vice president.

Said Mpaka “We can have a situation where there is a lot of pulling and pushing because of the practical interrelation of duties and functions, that why we are calling upon the institutions that have got a role in solving this to act quickly and resolve the issue lawfully.”

Vice President Saulosi Chilima was stripped his delegated duties after a report by the ACB according to President implicated him into a corruption scandal.
