Govt Procures 40 Thousand Doses of FMD Vaccines from Botswana

Government say it has used 250 million kwacha to procure 40 thousand doses of vaccines from Botswana to fight foot and mouth outbreak in Neno, Nsanje and Chikwawa districts.

However, Director of Animal Health and Livestock Development, Dr. Julius Chulu says authorities have already vaccinated 20 thousand livestock’s in affected districts to contain the outbreak.

“The foot and mouth outbreak which has affected three districts so far is under control. The public must not panic since we have already vaccinated a thousand of cattle in affected areas,” he said.

Veterinary expert, Dr. Poya Njoka has advised authorities to always be vigilant in controlling future outbreak arguing failure to do so threatens the country’s export to agricultural products.

“When other countries hear that Malawi has foot and mouth disease, exports of agriculture products like sugar, tobacco and tea among others will be affected,” he said, adding that such products have potential to transmit the disease.

For years, Malawi has been grappling with foot and mouth and in 2019, the disease was reported in at least eight districts of Blantyre, Ntcheu, Dedza, Neno, Lilongwe, Mzimba, Karonga and Chitipa
