SLC Proposes Health Insurance for all Employees

The special Law Commission (SLC) is proposing the introduction of a health insurance for all employees and a small nominal fee for all non employed people to access services in public health facilities.

Commission's Chairperson Justice Dingiswayo Madise, made the revelation on Wednesday in Lilongwe following their review process of the public Health Act subject to adoption by the National Assembly.

"We have noted that the 15 percent budget allocation for health has never been realised and it is imperative that beneficiaries should contribute to health services either through health insurance or out of pocket payments" Madise said.

Deputy Minister of Health Enock Phale hinted that they will reflect on the provisions to ensure efficiency in the country's public health system.

"We believe the recommendations made by the special law commission will be adopted by parliament in the long run assisting in the implementation of the the already existing public health policies"Phale added.

After this review process by the special law commission on the review of the public health they will submit their final report to the Justice minister for onward transmission to cabinet and thereafter to the national assembly
