Prison spokesperson, Chimwemwe Shaba says the seven have already been put in isolation.

Shaba told Zodiak Online, the seven are the only active cases as he indicates that the facility will soon roll out a massive screening of the inmates to prevent further spread.

“These have already been isolated and that it means now we have to start of massive screening but for now we are testing those who are showing some signs,” said Shaba.

On the cholera outbreak scare, Shaba says that no inmate has tested positive for the disease.

“At Maula, we don’t have any prison case, it is only Blantyre prison that has registered cholera cases,” he added.

Centre for Human Rights Education Advice and Assistance (CHREEA) has since said the reemergence of COVID19 in prisons was expected.

CHREEA Executive Director, Victor Mhango makes reference to poor living conditions in the country’s prisons as a contributing factor.

“We have been saying that our prisons is a bleeding ground for diseases, we already anticipated this, the facilities in our prisons are not humane,” he said.
