Public University Applications go Digital

The National Council of Higher Education (NCHE) say the introduction of a public university selection computer-based application will ease the challenges that learners were facing with manual applications.

Speaking during a sensitization meeting with the Parliamentary Cluster Committee on Education on the introduction of the Digital App on Saturday in Salima, chair for the council Dr. Beatrice Mtimuni highlighted that with manual applications, some students who did well were being left out due to a number of gaps.

Students will be easily notified if their application has been sent immediately after applying and will only be requested to pay for the application once they receive a confirmation and this will also help lessen the costs of mailing application.

According to Mtimuni, the meeting with the cluster committee on education was for the council to request members of parliament to assist in the dissemination of information on the application to areas the council cannot reach.

Commenting on the matter, Member of Parliament for Thyolo central, who is also a member of the committee, Ben Phiri, hailed the initiative saying the system will give equal chances to all students who apply for university spaces.

“The coming in of the application will help end the narrative of nepotism as everything will be done digitally,” he said.

He further said that the application is a milestone in the educational sector in the country as the country thrives for the Malawi 2063 development agenda.

According to NCHE, students will now be able to get suggestions on schools they are eligible to apply to by inserting their examination grades in the application.
