As hunger continue to hit hard some communities across the country, 22 senior citizens from Senior Group Songa 1, Traditional Authority Mtonda in Mangochi have received bags of maize to avert the food shortages.

The donation under ‘Gogo Asafinyike initiative’ was courtesy of a Malawian family of Pastor Medson Mazengera currently based in the United States of America (USA).

Speaking on behalf of the Mazengera family on Sunday, Pastor Joseph Mhango of the Seventh Day Adventist Church said people of goodwill need to shoulder responsibility of helping the needy including the elderly to ease their daily sufferings.

“With the little we have, we need to share with marginalized communities like the elderly who are in dire need of support,” Pastor Mhango said.

He then called the citizenry to embrace the spirit of sharing with one another as per biblical teachings.

One of the beneficiaries, 75 year-old-granny, Etison Chiombang’oma, says the food assistance was timely.

“I have a four-member family but access to food and other basic needs remain a challenge,” said Chiombang’oma.

Meanwhile, Senior Group Songa 1 has expressed fear of food shortages among his subjects hence calling for relief food assistance to the area.

“My subjects accessed government cheap farm inputs under the Affordable Inputs Programme (AIP) late besides the continuous rains which have affected most crop fields,” he said.

Apart from the food assistance, the 22 grannies were also treated to a luncheon.
