Economist Calls For Review of Cannabis License Fees

An economic expert has re-ignited calls for Malawi to review the cannabis license fees arguing the current fees are prohibiting the country to benefit from the farming.

The expert, Dr. Betchani Tcheleni says the exorbitant license fees remain punitive to the potential growers beside the country’s economy.

“At the moment, we are even failing to meet export demand as a country due the fees and are prohibiting many potential growers to venture into the family,” he said.

He has since wondered why the authorities are giving a deaf ear when several people continue to protest the fees.

Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture Chairperson, Sameer Suleman while supporting the call says will lobby for the same with relevant authorities.

“The concerns are genuine. Apart from the license fees, we also need to review the whole Cannabis Act to suit Malawi’s aspirations,” he said.

However, license fees are pegged between $2,000 to $10,000 which several quarters of the society protest as too exorbitant.
