Archbishop Tambala who was speaking at this year's national Vocation Sunday celebrations held at Our Lady of Victory in Madisi Parish in Dowa cautioned the youth to desist from falling into trap of what he termed as bad cultures, singling out same sex marriages.
The head of Catholic Church in Malawi took advantage of this year's Vocation Sunday celebrations held in Madisi in Dowa to invite the youth in the country to consider devoting their life to God’s service as priests and several vocations.
He said the church in Malawi like most of the countries in the world is struggling to reach out to and meet spiritual needs of the faithful due to limited number of youths that are responding to vocations to religious life.
He however said the new teachings that are fueled by social media may obstruct youths answering God’s call.
“I was telling the youths gathered here to be decisive in decision making. Some reach up to 50 years without answering God’s call. I think youths should be decisive. I also warned them about the alien teachings that are fueled by social media. Some are bad and the youths ought to be careful.”
National Director for Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi, Father Vincent Mwakhwawa said youths ought to make good decisions in life.
Fr Mwakhwawa added that this year they are piloting a new model of Peer-to-Peer Vocations promotion to woo more youths understand and respond to their calling.
It is clear that number of priest and religious leaders are fewer than we would expect.
This new approach of peer to peer is flexible and very effective as young people will be able to reach out to each other. The Archdiocese of Lilongwe has been tasked to lead this here in Malawi. We hope youths will like and benefit from this approach” said Fr Mwakhwawa.
Meanwhile, Archdiocese Youth Chairperson, Chisomo Nkhoma said they will reach out to each and serve the Church.
This year's Vocations Sunday is commemorated under the theme “Hearts on fire, feet on the move” adapted from Luke 24 verse 13- 35.
