Airtel Malawi's Zili Mwa Ife Recipient Dress Ntcheu Learners

Winter is here again and for 120 primary learners at Kalande and Lusape primary schools in Traditional Authority (TA) Ganya in Ntcheu, nothing will discourage them to attend classes in this period as Tivekeni Initiative has dressed them all.

Elias Matope who is a recipient of K3.5 million under Airtel Malawi’s Zili Mwa Ife Campaign says the winter clothes were bought using part of the money he received from the mobile telecommunication company for helping 800 school children in his area.

However, Matope has told Zodiak Online that as a long term plan, the guardians of the benefiting learners will start accessing soft loans for them to ably support the basic needs of the school going children.

"Tivekeni Initiative idea is to address bearers to children education. When we look at a child especially one living in remotest rural areas, the struggle to attain quality education is what we intervene to address," he said.

A Standard 7 learner at Kalande Primary School, Edson William observes that harsh cold weather conditions are deterrent for many pupils to stay in school.

"When it is cold, it is very unlikely for us learners to concentrate in class hence the warm clothes are timely to keep us in school,' he said.

Meanwhile, the school's deputy headteacher, Stivelia Kang’ombe has called on well-wishers to emulate the gesture by the supporting the school which has a enrolment of 800 pupils.

"A majority of our learners are coming from families with poor financial backgrounds. Many lack school materials like exercise books and clothes," she said.
