MPS Records 54 Percent Decrease in Digital Money Fraud

The Malawi Prison Service has reported a decline in digital money fraud in the first quarter of 2024 from K28 million to K13 million in March this year representing 54.3 percent during the period under review.

Prison Spokesperson Chimwemwe Shaba has revealed this when they appeared before the parliamentary committee on Media, Information and Communication to provide an update on mobile money fraud orchestrated by prisoners.

Shaba has attributed the drop in percentage to intensified search operations in their security check points especially at Zomba maximum security prison.

"We would like to inform this gathering that most people were defrauded through Airtel money platform due to their big market share with little percentage on Mpamba as provided by the networking providers and the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA)," Shaba added.

Shaba stressed that their cordial working relationship with the network providers has assisted to the decline in percentage.

Acting committee chairperson Jappie Mhango has called for concerted efforts in curbing the problem which he says has become a global challenge.

Airtel managing director Charles Kamoto assured the committee of their commitment in addressing the problem by intensifying their security system.

Malawi is among countries that have off late registered increased cases of digital money fraud.
