Close to 200 people living with HIV in Chikwawa district are benefiting from a new social protection program that aims to ensure sustained livelihoods for the people.

The program is being implemented by Development Initiative Network-DIN, an organization which is using support accessed from individuals from the USA.

DIN has, so far, distributed goats, pigs, farm inputs (including irrigation equipment), tailoring machines and also hard-cash for village savings groups in order to fight stigma and other hardships that people living with HIV are facing.

Director for DIN, Anderson Biliati, told Zodiak Online that, this far, they have distributed 20 goats, 20 pigs, farm inputs (including irrigation equipment), 15 bicycles, sewing machines and K1.4m hard cash to boost village saving loan groups.

The program is worth around K10m and has targeted Chikhambi, William, Namavu and Likhubula villages.

‘Let’s help them program’ aims to reduce hardships and stigma that people living with HIV are facing in the hope that it would extend to benefit more other people.

“We are on the ground, to reach out to poor and vulnerable communities,” he said.

Chikwawa Council Chairperson, Clement Kamoto, says the project is directly benefiting and improving lives of ordinary people and he encouraged DIN to me transparent and accountable in all its efforts aimed at enhancing peoples’ livelihoods.
