Community Lashes Out At Health Workers in Chikwawa

People of Ngabu and Masache in Chikwawa are accusing staff Dolo Health Centre in the district of ill-treating patients arguing that the health workers open and close the facility as they wish.

Patrick Sabao of Tusida village in Ngabu area told Zodiak Online Friday afternoon that he brought his sick wife to the facility but stayed over four hours before they were attended to. He believes there was no justification for what happened.

“When we come to hospital, we expect to access treatment and not the way  things are happening here,” said Sabao while his wife lay on the bare floor in desperation.

On the day, Friday afternoon, the hospital had been closed despite government deploying two clinicians and three nurses earlier. People seeking help were stuck.

This reporter found two children of ages between four and six years, one woman in obvious pains and several others with various health problems looking stranded.

The nearest health facility is at Ngabu 20 kilometres away from Dolo Health Centre.

We were informed that the in-charge of the facility was on annual leave.

Chikwawa Health Office spokesperson, Settie Piriminta, said appropriate action would be taken after thorough investigations into the allegations.

“We will go and investigate. If found true, we will definitely take action,” he said.

Dolo Health Centre serves a population of over 40,000 Malawians excluding Mozambicans who also come for health services here.
