The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) says it has notified all four city councils and other two district councils of the planned anti-Jane Ansah demonstrations slated for 16th January, 2020.

One of the HRDC executive members, Billy Mayaya, told Zodiak Online that they have written Mzuzu, Lilongwe, Zomba and Blantyre city councils and Mzimba and Mangochi district councils.

Mayaya said apart from calling on Dr Jane Ansah to resign, HRDC also wants police to arrest fellow police officers suspected to have harassed people and raped women at Nsundwe, Mpingu and Mbwatalika in Lilongwe and also want authorities in all councils address challenges people there are facing.

“You are aware that the issue of police assault on citizens at Nsundwe is one of other priority issues. The other issue is about electoral justice,” said Mayaya.

Meanwhile, HRDC chairperson for eastern region, Madalitso Banda, says demonstrators in Zomba will also speak out against authorities failure to complete construction of Zomba stadium which was supposed to be completed last year.

In Zomba, demonstrators are expected to start from 8 am from city boundary after chinamwali market to Zomba Community Center ground then back to Zomba District Commissioner’s office while in Lilongwe, demonstrations will start from Lilongwe community ground to capitol hill passing the Anti-Corruption Bureau offices.
