At least 3, 954 households have been displaced in Phalombe after their houses collapsed and submerged due to heavy rains that has hit the district.

Phalombe District Commissioner, Rodrick Mateauma, told Zodiak Online on Thursday that the incident has affected areas of three traditional authorities in the district.

Mateauma said the areas are Jenala, Kaduya and Nkhulambe, saying the affected households are currently seeking refuge in their relatives’ houses as they are waiting for assistance.

He said the council has already submitted a report to the department of disaster management affairs for help.

Chairperson for Jenala Area Civil Protection Committee, Samson Nakhonyo, has called on authorities to swiftly intervene on the situation.

Nakhonyo said the number the affected households is likely to go up since the area is still receiving heavy rain fall.
