The Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services has warned that most of southern areas of the country are likely to experience heavy widespread rains associated with thunderstorms,   strong winds and fog.

The Department says this kind of weather will start from Sunday 19th January to Wednesday 22nd January 2020 due to the passage of an Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ).

“This will start from the south to central and northern areas with a deep low pressure system revolving around the Mozambique Channel intensifying the rains over the south as it extends its influence over the country.

“Most areas in the centre and north of the country are likely to experience isolated to scattered rains to be locally heavy associated with fog due to influence of Congo air mass and ITCZ, enhanced by thermal heating and orographic lifting effects over high ground,” says Jolam Nkhokwe, Director of Climate Change and Meteorological Services in the Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining.

Nkhokwe has cautioned the public in a statement to take precautionary measures “as some parts of the country will be experiencing thunderstorms associated with locally heavy downpours, hail, lightning and strong winds.

“The public is also advised to stay off corded phones, not touch electrical equipment or cords, avoid plumbing, not bath or wash dishes, stay away from windows and doors, not swim or fish, stay at a low spot away from trees, metal fences, pipes, tall and long objects during a thunderstorm.”
