About 6, 000 people have been displaced by floods in Nyachikadza area in Nsanje district.

Traditional Authority Nyachikadza told Zodiak Online on Monday that most of those affected people are seeking refuge in relatives’ homes while others have constructed temporary shelters to live in villages under chief Ngabu and Malemia.

This follows the continuous downpour and running water from upper areas.

TA Nyachikadza said that the flood victims from 25 villages are in dire need of food and nonfood support.

"I ask government and other partners to support my people with food, shelter and utensils," said TA Nyachikadza.

Nsanje District Commissioner Douglas Moffat said the floods have cut off the Nsanje-Marka road.

The DC added that his officers are on the ground to assess the road condition and the situation of flood victims.

In the neighboring Chikwawa district, some 189 families from Matsukambiya village in Ngabu area are living in a church after being displaced by the floods.

Other affected areas are Lundu, Ndakwera, and Makhuwira.
