Teacher Beats Learner Severely
Despite the abolition of corporal punishment in schools, it has been established that some teachers still administer such punishments to learners.
At Khave Primary School in Thyolo district for example, a teacher only identified as Mr. Chakwana is alleged to have severely beaten his student, Patrick Chimera on Wednesday.
Child Protection Worker in the area, Ignazio Maluwa, said it is alleged that using a fist, Mr. Chakwana beat up the student on the neck that resulted in nose bleeding.
“Though he reported the matter to another teacher, the student was not assisted and he went home where he reported the matter to his parents,” said Maluwa.
He said the angry parents stormed the school and after confronting the head teacher, the boy was taken to Khonjeni Health Centre where he was referred to Thyolo District Hospital.
“The parents failed to raise money for transport to the district hospital until Thursday morning when Primary Education Advisor for Khonjeni Education Zone directed the head teacher to release funds for transport for both the boy and his guardian,” he said.
Meanwhile, Thyolo Police Spokesperson, Sub-Inspector Amos Tione, said the teacher was summoned to Khonjeni Police Unit on the matter.
“You know we have not received a situation report on this matter and our officers at Khonjeni Police Unit have not treated it as a criminal matter,” said Tione.
