Vendors selling wares in shops and benches located outside the Mzuzu main market have abandoned their spots and are accusing the city council’s failure to manage garbage as it continues to pile up in public posing a health threat.

Earlier this month people surrounding Nsilo waste management closed the disposal site over the council’s failure to manage it. The development has contributed to the piling up of waste within town as the council has nowhere to dump the garbage.

For years now people in Mzuzu City mainly the main market together with those living near Nsilo management have continuously raised concerns over the city councils poor waste management system.

Of late, Mzuzu city’s business area has been flooded with garbage outside Mzuzu’s main market which has raised concerns by most that fear this may result in disease outbreaks such as Cholera and Typhoid.

David Ngulube, Emmanuel Makamu and Kondwani Jere are among those doing business near the market’s waste disposal site.

“Look at visitors who are coming to Malawi to visit Mzuzu, this cannot be good for them, they may not like to come to Mzuzu, because Mzuzu city is not good, they cannot buy food because of the garbage which is within the city.

“I will not come to my bench on Monday, because the smell and current situation is unbearable, see some the benches have been abandoned by the owners for fears of diseases, we are only coming because this business is how we survive,”  Jere said.

Some buyers have also complained of the same, saying it's no longer to buy food items like vegetables in the market.

“We cannot breathe, and we cannot buy some of the things we want to buy, we used to buy vegetables just near the bin of the city, but now we cannot buy them because the place itself is not good,” said one of the customers.

Spokesperson for Mzuzu city Council Mcdonald Gondwe confirmed the situation, saying it is as a result of the closure of Nsilo waste management system.

“It’s true that the situation is not that good. We have not been transporting our garbage,” Gondwe said.

Gondwe said the council will engage people living near Nsilo waste management so as to have it reopened.
