The Malawi Council for the Handicapped (MACOHA) has bailed out 160 students with disabilities from challenges of school fees in various secondary schools across the country.

MACOHA Executive Director, Georgina Navicha, told Zodiak Online Friday they have paid K6.9 million towards fees for students in 68 schools.

She said the money was realized during last year’s flag week.

The MACOHA Executive Director and other MACOHA officials on Friday handed over 1.6 million kwacha cheques to five schools around Blantyre namely; Chiradzulu Secondary, St. Patrick’s’, Bangwe Community Day Secondary School (CDSS), Bangwe Secondary School and Blantyre Secondary School.

The MACOHA Executive Director said the fees are for term one and two.

A Student from St. Patrick’s Secondary School, Duster Lucius, has described the support as timely.

“I am very glad today because you know issues of fees affect learning; you fail to study when you recall that have fees balances.

“I am grateful to MACOHA, they have addressed our problem, said Duster who is currently in form one,” he said.

Chiradzulu Secondary Senior Teacher, Mary Sande, described the problem of fees at the institution as serious.

“We are in need of this bursary on a serious note. We have several organizations that come in but are not enough. Some students are on the verge of dropping out.

“This impacts on the students negatively as they fail to concentrate on classes, they have to worry about the school fees,” said Sande.
