Man Arrested for Breaching Peace

Police in Mulanje on Monday arrested a 30 year old man suspected to have mobilized people to gang against Mulanje Energy Generation Company (MEGA) on accusation that it swindled close to K90 billion meant for compensation of people whose property was affected during the electrification project.

Mulanje Police Officer-In-Charge Senior Assistant Commissioner, Kelvin Mulezo, said Emmanuel Diamond first mobilized and told people in Bondo village and surrounding villages MEGA embezzled K90 billion as compensation on their property that was affected during the electrification project.

“To the contrary, the project had no compensation and Diamond was also alleging that chiefs in the area were involved in embezzlement of the compensation funds,” said Mulezo.

He said the suspect collected and submitted names of affected people to lawyers who sued the company on their behalf.

“This actually fueled serious enmity between MEGA and chiefs on one side and the locals on another side and after our investigations, we established that Diamond was bringing chaos in the area; hence his arrest,” said the police OC.

Mulezo said currently the suspect has been charged with conduct likely to cause breach of peace while investigations continue.

Village headman Kalamwa told us that Diamond has brought chaos in the area as people are not believing us anymore.

“Some of our subjects have been believing his sentiments and they have lost the trust they had in us. Some are calling us thieves, greedy and unsatisfied leaders because of his unfounded allegations,” said VH Kalamwa.

Company officials declined to comment on the matter saying it is now a police case.
