Phalombe District Council says it has no land where it can use to relocate some markets that share boundaries with schools.

For example, for eight years now, education stakeholders in the district have been asking the council to relocate Nyambalo market, claiming it is situated close to Chilayeni Primary school thereby compromising provision of quality education.

Phalombe District Council Chairperson, Fedson Thomas, told Zodiak Online Sunday that the council has been receiving complaints about the market that it is disrupting classes.

According to Thomas, the issue will be presented to the council’s education service committee to map the way forward.

"Some concerned people have been approaching the council to consider relocating Nyambalo market to another site far from the school to ensure that classes are not disrupted," said Thomas.

He said the council has no land where it can establish a market once relocating the market from where it is now.

Phalombe District Education Network Chairperson, Vincent Thom, said the council should move in with speed in addressing the issue which has been discussed for eight years.

Thom said local community structures such as Area Development Committee (ADC) need to take a leading role to ensure that the market is relocated to another place, saying a beer drinking joint and a rest house are inconveniencing learners.
